Well, that's a rocky start to 2021. Not unexpected. We'll all be keeping a close eye on the government with the announcements yesterday on the new case of "community transmission". By the way, is it just us? Or does it not seem that the people who are found to have Covid in the community always seem to be prolific travellers and visitors or various establishments?

Here's our news round up for the last week.

Prime Minister & Advisors On Mask Use

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is joined by her Chief Science Advisor Dr Juliet Gerrard and Dr Michelle Dickinson (aka Nanogirl) to answer some commonly asked questions about COVID-19. In this video this they talk about what people should do during the COVID-19 outbreak and specifically are advising against the general public wearing masks as a general precaution.

"For the general public if you don't have symptoms there's no need to wear a mask."

Video was uploaded on 12 March 2020 and continues to be featured on the Ministry of Health's social media and on both the Prime Minister's and Nano Girl's social media accounts.

Lockdowns Don't Reduce Covid-19 Deaths

“Government mandated lockdowns do not reduce Covid-19 deaths: implications for evaluating the stringent New Zealand response” by John Gibson. New Zealand Economic Papers, August 25, 2020.

This paper was written back in August but only published last month and came to our attention today.

“The New Zealand policy response to Coronavirus was the most stringent in the world during the Level 4 lockdown. Up to 10 billion dollars of output (≈3.3% of GDP) was lost in moving to Level 4 rather than staying at Level 2, according to Treasury calculations. For lockdown to be optimal requires large health benefits to offset this output loss. Forecast deaths from epidemiological models are not valid counterfactuals, due to poor identification. Instead, I use empirical data, based on variation amongst United States counties, over one-fifth of which just had social distancing rather than lockdown. Political drivers of lockdown provide identification. Lockdowns do not reduce Covid-19 deaths. This pattern is visible on each date that key lockdown decisions were made in New Zealand. The apparent ineffectiveness of lockdowns suggests that New Zealand suffered large economic costs for little benefit in terms of lives saved.”

NZ Vaccine Strategy Rollout

Earlier this morning Prime Minister, Jacinda Adern, announced the Government had secured enough vaccines for the whole of New Zealand, and was planning to vaccinate border workers from the second quarter of 2021 with the rest of the country from mid-year.

Two new agreements have been signed for two-dose vaccines: one for 7.6 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which will cover 3.8m people; and another for 10.72m doses of a vaccine from Novovax, enough for 5.36m people.

[NZ's population sits at just over 5 million of which approximately 1 million of us are aged under 16. So our PM has secured enough doses to vaccinate 9.16 million people with an eligible population of ~4 million...]

“This will be New Zealand’s largest immunisation roll out ever,”

New Zealand has no cases of Covid-19 within the community currently, and 43 "cases" within quarantine facilities.

[Translation 43 people in NZ have tested positive according to a highly questionable PCR test, not that these people are actually unwell with Covid or even displaying any symptoms of anything.]

Johns Hopkins - Closer Look U.S. Deaths

WOW this is interesting ...

"These data analyses suggest that in contrast to most people’s assumptions, the number of deaths by COVID-19 is not alarming. In fact, it [Covid19] has relatively no effect on deaths in the United States."

This is a statement reported in a Johns Hopkins Newsletter dated 26 November 2020. The link to the article has been deleted a few hours ago but you can still find it cached and the presentation on You Tube remains up as at time of writing.

We have written to Johns Hopkins and the author to enquire as to the reasons for the article being taken down. There is also much conjecture on Twitter about it. Johns Hopkins statement is in the pics below as are examples of the Twitter-sphere response.

If the analysis is true of the US, what does it mean about our disproportionate reaction?

The statement was made by Genevieve Briand, Assistant Program Director of the Applied Economics Master’s Degree Program at Johns Hopkins.

She critically analyses the effect of COVID-19 on U.S. deaths using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in her webinar titled “COVID-19 Deaths: A Look at U.S. Data.”

Earlier this week Billy Te Kahika informed Advance NZ candidates that he has decided not to continue with the party. Naturally this is sad for us all, given the huge effort we all put into the 2020 Election Campaign. Billy has inspired many people around New Zealand, and I will forever be grateful for the time working alongside him after he chose to join with Advance NZ for the election.

This is not the end of our party - we are all only beginning the work we need to do now, to plan, prepare, and work towards Election 2023.This Government needs to be held to account, and we must keep standing up for Kiwis rights and freedoms. Your rights and freedoms in your own country.

Advance NZ will be continuing, and will be restructuring into the next phase of our journey. The haste of the election campaign meant everything was done in a hurry. Our reconstituted party, with more time now, will be the democratic, transparent and professional party that members, supporters and candidates deserve.

The COVID-19 virus has led nations around the world to take radical action to prevent its spread. In New Zealand, the Labour Government has adopted an approach of eradication at any cost. That strategy has failed.

In the false hope of eradicating the virus, we now face Labour’s Second Wave of Lockdowns. There is no end in sight for the current lockdown or for ending COVID-19 restrictions at lower levels. Labour’s plan is for years of rolling lockdowns.

Housing Policy

New Zealand has a major housing crisis with an immediate high demand. This has been caused by high immigration numbers and many returning Kiwis who are entering the housing market.

The Government currently spends up to $600 Million dollars a quarter on ‘Emergency and Temporary’ housing which is literally money down the drain. When houses are built they are cheap, unhealthy and do not last for very long.

Labour’s promise — through their much heralded Kiwibuild program to provide 10,000 houses per year — has failed. They have only produced approximately 150 houses each year.

New Zealand needs a Government with experienced housing industry professionals, who know how to work with key stakeholders involved in the three Ministry portfolios of Housing, Building and Construction, and Urban Development.

There is a need for residential sections in many regions. Emergency housing is at an all-time high. Property values have continued to climb during 2020 because supply has not met the demand.

Agriculture Policy

Farming is the backbone of New Zealand. For generations, tangata whenua and farming families have sweated and toiled to turn this nation into a fertile and rich garden. Outside of the few large cities, most people live close to the land that feeds them, and in turn, are blessed to enjoy our tiny corner of paradise.

Successive governments have acted to destroy that legacy. Policies are being implemented that will, according to Federated Farmers, “end pastoral farming in parts of the country.

Health Policy

The Covid Response has shown us that simply focusing on medical issues fails to fully address what makes us healthy. Treading the current narrow path with a model that focuses on disease and pharmaceutical treatments, which fails to meet the wider public needs, is limited and outdated.

The Medicines Act 1981 legislates against alternative medicines and treatments when a person should have the right to choose their own healthcare. We will restore that right. The Medicines Health Act 1981 is out of date and requires modification. Advance NZ considers it requires urgent review and clarification in areas that cover the assessment, treatment and rights of people with a mental health disorder.

Advance NZ aims to promote true wellness —hauora — within New Zealand, to improve quality of life, and reduce the need for medical intervention.

Our party’s health policies are based on the holistic view of health, taking into account the four main cornerstones of well-being: Physical, Mental, Family and Spiritual. This Te Whare Tapa Whā model, developed by Mason Durie, is already promoted by the Ministry of Health, but not followed by our medical or legal systems.

Democracy Policy

Democracy is precious and must be protected so future generations can enjoy the same rights and freedoms previous generations, at great cost, fought to protect.

Our elected representatives are under a clear obligation to speak for their constituents in Parliament, to represent the will of the people and make laws in the people’s best interest.

Rally For Freedom

The Co-Leaders of Advance NZ, Billy Te Kahika and Jami-Lee Ross called for a National Rally for Freedom in Auckland yesterday (Saturday 12 September). The peaceful rally took place at Aotea Square with a march on Queen Street in Central Auckland calling for an end to ongoing rolling lockdowns in dealing with Covid-19.

Appearing alongside the leaders was the mother (whose name remains suppressed) who was unjustifiably jailed under COVID-19 laws last month. She appeared at the rally in solidarity with those protesting.

The rally was a resounding success with thousands turning out to protest Labour and National’s failed lockdowns strategy. Speakers shared that new evidence is showing lockdowns don’t work and that COVID-19 is no where near as lethal as we were misled to believe.

Jami-Lee Ross said “New strategies show we can and must learn to live with the virus as a nation, just like we do with every other seasonal illness that comes our way. Lockdowns at any cost are not sustainable." He asked fellow New Zealanders whether they were prepared to endure years of this strategy, or did they want to rally together to say we have had enough: “Freedom, liberty, and human rights are not luxuries that we give away to Government whenever we are told to."

Firearms Policy

The people of Aotearoa New Zealand have a rich history of gun ownership and hunting in the outdoors. The rural environment and provincial areas of New Zealand offer great access to hunting and outdoor pursuits.

As an outdoors, agriculture, and gun-collecting people, there are approximately 300,000 licensed firearms owners in our country.

There are recognised issues with the way our Government manages the firearms topic. The new law was introduced on the back of a great tragedy, the high emotion this horrible crime generated led to a knee-jerk reaction in the creation of the current Firearms law

We want to protect our community as well as our democratic rights that include safe and legal gun ownership.

Immigration Policy

The levels of immigration by successive governments has been damaging for New Zealand’s economy and New Zealand’s long-term interests. We will conduct a review of New Zealand’s capacity to handle future migration with a view to setting a significantly lower overall number of net migrations.

Based on the current economic situation post-COVID, we are going to delay further immigration until it is economically feasible to do so.

Education Policy

Education is one of the hallmarks of a civilised society that aims to pass down knowledge from generation to generation so as a team we can achieve better and greater things.

Advance NZ believes our future, economic, cultural and social wellbeing will depend on our knowledge base and our ability to understand and to innovate in all fields of action. Our policy will reflect on this by increasing the support and funding our school systems are receiving. From our Universities and tertiary institutions. To our Schooling and Early Childhood Education programs - every step of the system is built on the previous one.

Maori Policy

There are nearly a dozen historical documents that have been involved in the agreements of Aotearoa and the creation of New Zealand, and they are still in power today.

However, it has been far easier to simply ignore them to history, only pulling them out when needing to make a statement, rather than confront the truth of their design. This purposeful avoidance of our beginnings has also been the core source of much of our recurring societal problems.
